The use of modern technology in aiding terrorist actions
As the world’s technology develops the technology of terrorists are also became diverse and severe.
Biological terrorist attacks involve the spreading of bacteria, viruses, and toxins. Bioterrorists may contaminate the food and water to distribute the toxins or diseases, such as anthrax or smallpox. They also put harmful bacteria in restaurant. However for the terrorist it is difficult for them to prepare the biological attack in successful way. Chemicalterroristattacks are related with the spread of toxic chemicals. Chemical attack can affect the central nervous system, and can cause paralysis or death. It can also burn or damage the skin, eyes, nose, throat, or lungs. The examples for the chemical attacks are mustard gas attack, blistering agent that cause burns and blindness, hydrogen cyanide, poisonous gas, and sarin which is a dangerous nerve gas. Terrorist try to steal, buy, or manufacture the chemical weapons. A nuclear terrorist attack isthe most dangerous attack. Because it is very dangerous, governments seek to keep nuclear weapons out of their hands. For this there was not any nuclear attack so far. Computer based terrorism is also called as a cyber terrorism. Basically they design and distribute the computer viruses, which destroy the data and computer operation. They can also steal or change the valuable data, and information. Terrorists are able to use other forms of terror to carry out the violence or threat to the people. Some governments use terrorist to torture and murder people to get the attention from opposition. This method is called as a state terrorism or state-conducted terrorism. In addition to this war crime, genocide, and other intended violation act can be regarded as an act of terrors.
The influence of the media on perceptions of terrorism
One of the main aims for the terrorist is to get attention from the international media and publics, because they carry out terror to raise fear from public people by using media. Modern media have supported more publicity and fear for the terrorist to the world people, because of its fast and clear reports from the media. Some consider that terrorists manipulate and use media, but others consider that they are the one who get the attention without any manipulation.Paul Watson said"you cannot get your information across any other way"which means controlled media is based on the terrorism. For the advantages Mass media can detect the terrorist group and discourage them to stop the terror, and inform to the people to avoid it. However it can instigate to terrorist groups to have more brutal terror toward people. It is very controversial issue that usage of media for terrorism is appropriate or not.
The use of technology in fighting against terrorism
Technology is not only used by terrorist but also used in fighting against terrorism. Modern terrorism has globalized along with the rest of the world, and Cold War distinctions between domestic and international terrorism are no longer meaningful. It takes a network to fight a network. Terrorists hide their planning and preparation in a sea of noise, but a well-resourced terrorist group has a global scope, reach, and presence, crossing borders and jurisdictions with ease. Terrorists have shown an ability to exploit information technology as a driver of their own globalization. Many have speculated that terrorists may soon begin targeting information technology, as well as using it as a weapon, for example with attacks against critical infrastructures and cyber terrorism. There are at least three opportunities where the United States must leverage information technology in its war against terrorism: intelligence analysis, critical infrastructure protection, and cyber-conflict. Intelligence analysis in particular presents a watershed opportunity for the US to prevail over terrorism by successfully interdicting it, rather than responding to the consequences of its attacks. However, the use of information technology in all three of these areas is fraught with legal issues that must be addressed before the US can effectively use information technology against terrorism. To address these issues adequately, technology and law must be developed in parallel, with mutual respect for each other. This is unprecedented, but necessary, if we are to balance civil security, civil and economic liberty, and technological progress.
How does technology help make terrorism a global issue rather than a national or local issue
Technology help terrorism to be a global issue rather than a national or local issue because since the technology is so well developed that many inventions, such as computer, internet, telephone and even transportations help people to send information to other part of the world very quickly. Terrorism became truly global in the late 1960s, with the advent of cheap commercial intercontinental airline travel and international communications. Not coincidentally, cheap intercontinental travel and international communications are two of the engines driving globalization. So for example due to the inventions and development of technology even though the terrorism happened in other part of the world it will be told to everyone in the world in less than an hour which is making global issue rather than an national or local issues.
